February 10th -
Hello everyone. I hope you are all doing well and enjoyed your late morning. As I will not be able to be back in class with you for a couple of weeks, I wanted to have you get started on one of my favorite projects - Robert Rauschenberg collages. We started looking at some of his work before I left. Now, just follow the link to the left "Project Descriptions and Rubrics" & then follow the directions for the Rauschenberg Collage. If you have any questions, hopefully the advanced kids can help. Do your best creative work. I look forward to seeing some great projects from you guys.

January 31 - February 4
Monday
  • As we are finishing up our Public Service projects, I would like to start gearing up for another assignment. Next week we will be using the scanner to create image collages. In preparation I will need all of you to bring in a MINIMUM OF TWO objects to contribute to our collection by this FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 4th. You are required to bring in at least one item for each of the following categories:
    • a natural found object - go outside and look around!!! Pick something with texture and intrigue.
    • a what in the world object - a peculiar or unusual (but NOT naturally made) object - something with character - this could be a toy, a kitchen item, a tool, or a piece of jewelry - put some effort into your selection.
    • You will get a 10 point grade for bringing in these items by this Friday.

  • After having seen the images and having heard the conversations you had in group last week, some of you need to revise your Public Service Posters. Take class time today to "fix" the problems in your image and to consider some of the changes proposed in group last Friday.

  • If you are satisfied with your work, please watch this screen capture / tutorial on the Text tool in Photoshop. You will learn how to double or triple outline text among other things. To illustrate that you can employ the concepts taught, think of your favorite quote and make it pop in Photoshop by using the techniques taught in this tutorial. This assignment will count for 5 extra credit points.

Tuesday -
REMEMBER - bring in a MINIMUM OF TWO objects to contribute to our collection by this FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 4th.
  • one natural object - go outside and look around!!! Pick something with texture and intrigue.
  • one what in the world object - a peculiar or unusual (but NOT naturally made) object.
You will get a 10 point grade for bringing in these items by this Friday.

Next week we will be scanning these images and making collages. The project we will be doing is inspired by one of my favorite artists - Robert Rauschenberg. To get some inspiration, today we will be looking at his life and works.

Begin, by reading the biographical and artistic contribution information about Rauschenberg here.

Next, go to this page and follow the directions.
This assignment is a 20 point classwork assignment (ignore the value stated on the linked site)
. Your work should be turned in before leaving class.

Attention all Advanced Digital students:
  • You should all be ready to turn in your first set of images. If you have not gotten your edited 5 x 7s finished, they should be by the end of the week. Remember, you are required to do two per nine weeks and your next set is due February 19th.
  • Sign up for the photographer whom you plan to research for your project.
  • Please enter your blog submissions.

Thursday -
Today we will continue to study Robert Rauschenberg by watching a documentary film about him "Inventive Genius".

REMEMBER - Tomorrow is the last day to bring in objects for our scanner project - this is a 10 point grade.

Also, all ADVANCED DIGITAL -students should see Tuesday's directions for information about past-due and upcoming assignments.

Mon - Wed You should be well underway with your Public Service Poster by this point. Continue to work diligently on this assignment. I will be coming around to consult with you individually on your progress. Remember these projects are due by Thursday.

Blog Comment #4 is due by the end of the week.

Thursday - All Public Service Projects are due. As usual, you should flatten your work and save it in your class folder using your last name.

Friday - Class Critique
You will be assigned to groups of five. Every student in the group will write a thoughtful and constructive critique of all the members' submissions including their own. Each critique should include the following information:

  • the student artist's name
  • Are the colors too vivid? Not vivid enough? What about the font color? Is the text easily legible? Does it fit the theme and the intended message?
  • Are there too many bright areas? Too many dark areas?
  • Is the photo "balanced"? Would it be better if there were other objects or other light/dark areas in the frame to improve the balance? If the photo is off balance, is there a reason for it?
  • Does the chosen composition work, or would you have done something differently?
  • Can you tell what element(s) of the project was created using Vector Graphics? Assess the quality of the Vector Graphic and the other images used. Does the finished project look professional? What element(s) catch your attention the most?
  • What element(s) could be improved and how?
  • Does the image work well to promote the stated cause? Why or why not?
Finally, after answering the above questions for all group members - including yourself, circle the student's name whom you feel did the best job on this project. These critiques are due at the end of class for 20 points - NOT MONDAY! Any critiques that are illegible, poor;y written, unthoughtful or vague will be returned to you to redo for a lower grade.

Monday - MLK Day

Tuesday
* Please Note. Several grades have already been entered for this nine weeks. Please remember that due dates need to be adhered to, or you will lose credit for the assignment. We shouldn't have to be going over this anymore.

* Public Service Projects - By this point, you should have turned in your detailed description for your project (due last Thursday!). So, you should be ready to go. Remember you must use at least one Vector Graphic image in your poster. Many of you did not seem to put much effort into the example you made while watching the screen-capture! I am hoping to see a much better product this time. You can also use original drawings that you scan in, internet pics, stock photographs or personal photos. The main idea is to get your point across and to convince your audience to support your cause. It does not have to have images - it could be all text. These projects are due next Thursday, January 27th.

* Vector Graphics - the actual test on the screen capture that explained this concept will be this Friday. However you are encouraged to start taking the practice test as often as you would like. Here is the link. Please be advised that although the test will cover the same questions, the order will change each time you take the test. Vector Sceen Capturer

*Attention!! The remote control is not working for the studio lighting, so all we have is the two hot lights. You are welcome to try to use them, otherwise we will have to postpone further studio projects a week or more. Check back soon under your class period to get your new assigned time. If you are finished, go ahead and fill out the project review sheet (copies on my desk). This self-assessment of your project is a 10 point written grade. I have made a page on the wiki, with some grading criteria.

Wednesday - Continue working on the three main assignments for the week as described for Tuesday. Be sure to stay on task, and use time management so that all three projects are addressed. Also, be sure to ask for help as needed.

Also be sure to turn in your third blog comment of the grading period!!!

Happy Snow Days!!!

Wednesday
7th period
I believe you guys are a day or two behind my morning classes. So please review the assignments posted last week so that you can get caught up. Pay special attention to the following:

  • Please get your two idea sheets into Ms. Hughes as soon as possible.
  • Please review the Vector Graphics video - be sure to have filled out the activity that goes with the video and discuss the answers in class. There will be a quiz next week on Vector Graphics (and the Text tool too which you will soon learn),
  • You also need to practice creating a simple image with Vector tools as you follow along with the video. Again see the directions from last week regarding the specifics of all these assignments,
In the PS Poster project that you are preparing to work on, I want you to use the Pen tool from Vector Graphics in at least one element, and more if you feel comfortable with it. However, you can also use original drawings that you scan in, internet pics, stock photographs or personal photos. The main idea is to get your point across and to convince your audience to support your cause. It does not have to have images - it could be all text.

  • Please work with Ms. Hughes to finish your studio projects as soon as possible. These can now be changed to be solely between one photographer and one model if no one has any new ideas, If you need a date, please let me know via email, and then check your class link ( to the left) to verify your appointed time.
Thursday

  • Due at the end of class today and will count 20 points
You must make a detailed list and written explanation OR a detailed sketch of the exact images and the words or phrases that will be used in your PS poster. Your written or visual explanation should reflect thorough research and knowledge of the topic as well as thoughtful design elements. This will be due at the end of class Monday and will count 20 points

  • Continue practicing those vector graphics tools. Remember you are required to use a vector graphics tools to create at least one element of your poster design. Additionally, there will be a test on the use of these tools this Friday, January 14th.
Friday

  • Recap - You should know how vector tools work, having filled out the study sheet and having watched the screen capture. We will go over the study sheet today. Be ready for a test next week.
  • Following along with the screen capture, you should have put a simple graphic (not necessarily related to your project) in your class folder on the server
  • You should have turned in two forms presenting reasonable ideas for your Public Service project.
  • After I have approved one of the ideas you presented, you should have responded by completing a much more detailed sketch (in pictures or words) of the image that you envision creating.
  • Lastly, if you have not yet done so, you MUST sign up for a work day in the studio to complete the project that we have been working on for 6 weeks +.
  • Lastly, Lastly you own 2 Blog comments!
I will be grading the assignments listed above soon. The due date for all of these assignments has already passed, but due to weather and other circumstances I will continue to accept work submitted until Tuesday, January 18th.

If you stay on task in class, I see no reason why these Public Service posters cannot be finished by Thursday, January 27th.
